Mary Melnyk's Biography
- BS – University of Cincinnati in Medical Technology.
- Married Alan Melnyk September 5, 1970.
- Moved to Columbia Township November, 1972.
- Worked in Southwest General lab for 6 years.
- Worked at the Columbia Branch Library for 25 years.
Including as Aide, Assistant, Associate 1 and Associate 2 with Dot MacIntyre instituted 2nd grade library tours (now defunct). 5th grade Book Talks. When computers first gave access to the book collection I and another employee gave classes on how to order books on line to the 5th grade, in the middle school computer lab. Early years did story time. Did planning for Summer Reading Program early years. Later order books, weed books, readers advisory, in charge in absence of the Librarian and other duties as assigned.
- Member of Columbia United Methodist Church - Member of Choir as schedule permits.
Member of the Columbia Historical Society since the mid 1970s. Have served as Secretary, Corr. Secretary in the 1970s and early 1980s, President since 1984 except for 3 years when caring for Mother. The society has participated in Homecoming much of that time, Engine show until I did not have young legs anymore I would set the schedule and request the members to pick their time to work. The last few years have participated the Library’s Art & Authors. The society has published several books and have made available other historic documents. Have video taped interviews. With another member have shown the Columbia Story to the 3rd grade since the late 1980s, also Block House Days to the 5th grade. The 3rd grade tours the Bronson House Museum every year. With the other officers set the schedule for the year. With other members attend the Intersociety Meeting to report on Columbia’s activities and hear what other historical societies in the county are doing. In 2003 worked with other societies on the Ohio Bicentennial display at French Creek. The society set up a Columbia Bicentennial display in December of 2007 when all of the school children in the 2nd through 8th grade visited the site and the museum. We had over 560 students that day. The next day the Baptist Church, Methodist Church and Town Hall also had open house. There have been many one time occurrences of displays and talks. Because of a teacher request since the late 1980s have given a talk on Native American Art to the 5th Grade.
- Participate in “Liberty” in the chorus and have also done one of the readings.
- Belongs to the Western Reserve Land Conservancy - Firelands Chapter.
- Belongs to the Appalachian Ohio Alliance (also a land conservancy is southern Ohio).
- Belongs to the Cleveland Natural History Museum.
